When you first decided to start that new career path or leap into that new business venture, you likely were thinking:
- “I know I’m worth more than they’re paying me.”
- “I can’t wait to get away from this awful job.”
- “I just want to be home with my kids.”
- “This dead-end job is going nowhere.”
- “I’m tired of working crazy hours and holidays.”
These and many, more thoughts go through the heads of every career changer or would-be business owner, and are often the driving force behind that final, “I quit.”
But while they’re great for lighting a fire and inspiring you to make that scary leap into your new career path, they’re not so fabulous at motivating you to grow and improve.

They won’t inspire you to increase your skills, raise your rates, or even go after those big goals you desire to achieve.
They won’t help you find the courage to seek help in the areas you’re not as strong, hire a new coach or launch a brand-new program.
To find the inspiration to thrive in your new career or business path, you have to identify the real WHY behind what you do. Your “why” is your anchor.
It’s that thing you go back to when the motivation is gone…when the support seems non-existent, and when you can’t see just how everything is going to work out.
Your “why” can be based on a number of different factors including spiritual beliefs, desired financial outcomes, family commitments, and the list goes on.
For the purpose of this post, we’ll focus on why’s stemming from passion, financial and philanthropic desires.
1. Passionate Whys
“Passion based” is a phrase that’s found a massive following in the past few years, and seems to be the holy grail of entrepreneurial adventures.
And for those with a true passion for their field, it can be a strong motivator.
Some professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs are passionate about a subject, spending all their waking hours learning about the topic.
Some are passionate about a market and would do anything to help their ideal client achieve his or her goals.
Learning to harness your passion will help take your career and business to the next level.
2. Financial Whys
Maybe you want to retire at 40 to travel the world or send your kids to an elite private school. Maybe you love fast cars and dream of driving a brand-new Ferrari.
Whatever your big dream, you know you’d never make it by remaining in your current role, or career path. While everyone seems to go on and on about those passion-based dreams, the truth is there’s nothing wrong with wanting financial fulfillment.
Money is a necessary tool. We need it, and the more we have, the easier life is. And wanting more of it is nothing to be ashamed of, as long as you maintain your integrity and authenticity in pursuit of it.
3. Philanthropic Whys
Plenty of people who desire to make more money do so because they want to have more to give.
You’ve no doubt heard of entrepreneurs who use their earnings to fund mission trips, build schools in war-torn, third world countries, and support a variety of charities at home and abroad.
Others use the time freedom they’ve created to volunteer with local hospitals, animal shelters and children’s organizations.
If you have a heart for a cause, a philanthropic why might be the driving force that takes your business to the next level.
No matter what the driving force is behind your why the key is to keep it at the forefront of your mind.
When things get challenging and you find yourself wanting to throw in the towel and quit, your why will be there to help you move forward.
If you’re not sure what your why is, take a few minutes to ask yourself the question “if money were no object, what would I be doing instead?” In that response, you’ll uncover the thing(s) you desire to do the most.
The next step will be to uncover why you want to do those things.
Once you have clarity on the what and the why you can then begin taking action towards the how.
