" If you really want to do something, you'll find way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse.
~ Jim Rohn
It’s hard to believe we’re almost half-way through 2019! I’m sure I’m not alone in wondering “where the time has gone?” Similar to previous years, 2019 has certainly come with its rewards and challenges, high’s and low’s, along with moments on the mountain and periods in the valley.
Despite the period or season, hopefully, you maintained a focus on the goals and intentions you set at the beginning of the year (or end of 2018).
If not, the good news is, there are still seven months left, giving you plenty of time to recover and maybe even exceed your original targets.
To get back on track (or check how you’re tracking so far) you can use the tried and tested goal setting strategy below.
1. Write them down.
By writing down your goals you are showing personal commitment and declaring your intention to succeed. Additionally, this will help you gain clarity and prioritize your goals based on the importance and value they create.
2. Think S.M.A.R.T.
Remember the acronym S.M.A.R.T., which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Focus clearly on what you desire, and be sure to set a date by which you will have achieved each of your goals so you have some accountability.
3. Focus on the benefits.
Think through all the benefits of achieving your goals, and write them all down. This will help you get clear on WHY these goals are important to you and help serve as an anchor for you as you move through the process of achievement.
4. Create a detailed plan.
Having chosen your preferred way forward, identify all the actions you’ll need to take.
This breaks a seemingly big and daunting task down into manageable steps, enables you to plan what to do, and set milestones so you can easily track your progress and make adjustments as needed.
5. Assess your resources.
Which skills, knowledge, abilities do you already possess? What additional resources do you need, and for how long?
In what ways can you leverage your network for support? Get a realistic preview of what you have available and what you’ll need.
6. Take action!
Transform your goals into achievements by actually moving forward and taking the first step you identified when you formed your action plan.
7. Review and reward.
Using the milestones you established, check your progress regularly to ensure you are moving in the right direction.
To the extent that you can, don’t neglect to celebrate your achievements and accomplishments. This will help you keep up the momentum and keep you focused on the end goal.
This strategy can be used to help you define and map out both big and small goals so that you don’t get overwhelmed or forced into a place where you feel you have to abandon your goals.
And while you’re out there building that great career or business, take caution not to neglect the things and people who matter the most...aka you, your health, and your relationships!
Cheers to your success and achievement!
